For the course we had to do a live assessment this involve working with a commercial business and creating a suitable arrangement for the venue.

Assessment One - Arrangement for a Commercial Outlet

exterior 24/04/2014
Venue: Chancery Coffee House (The Chancery, 22 MARKET PLACE, MALTON, NORTH YORKSHIRE, YO17 7LX)

Owner and Main contact throughout the assessment: Nicola

Specification and venue
The venue is modern and has a sophisticated atmosphere. The color scheme is dark but natural light floods in from the front windows. The colors used are purples and taupe tones on the walls a bold dark violet is the feature room. Its accessorized with wood features and different varieties of vases.
The shapes seen in the venue are long and rounded; the large vase in the corner caught my attention and the lights above the bar. The impressive clock to end of the room is a focal piece to the whole room
The more angular shapes are black thick frames and black boards hanging from the walls, these themselves become statements.

I have decided to select the corner of the main bar (replacing the glass vase) this will be a brilliant area to display my arrangement. I will have to improvise with the sizing and height of the space.

Sketches 25/04/2014

Final sketch 26/04/2014
These are many original sketches for my design i think they would would work well within the space.
I visited back to the venue with my sketches and she selected (final sketch) she said it would highlight the venues key design points such as the color and the materials.
Even though she chose this design she has asked for certain specification such as bottom will be covered with bark to reflect the bar and the color of the anthiuriums being more muted. Originally i wanted green so we have changed to white i can understand this change as she want a more elegant, understated design.

Over the design i have chosen to select White anthiuriums and wire.

History and Culture of Malton

Malton is a market town and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire, has a population of around 13,000 people. It is located to the north of the River Derwent which forms the historic boundary between the North and East Ridings of Yorkshire.
The town is mainly Caucasian race, and has traditional routes. The culture of the area is traditional and a majority of shops close Sunday still. Market days are holding every Saturday.
Malton is the local commercial and retail center. In the town center there are many small traditional independent shops along with some high street names. The market place has recently become a meeting area with a number of coffee bars and cafés opening all day to complement the public houses. The town aims to become known as 'Yorkshire's Food Capital'.
The ‘We Love Malton’ campaign was launched in March 2009. It aims to reinvigorate the town of Malton as a 'Food Lovers' destination and raise its appeal with both residents and tourists.
Malton has strong links with Charles Dickens - all stemming from his close friendship with Charles Smithson, a solicitor based at offices in the town's Chancery Lane.  Smithson first met Dickens while he was in London as part of his legal training.
It is widely believed that the Chancery Lane offices were the model for Scrooge's counting house in A Christmas Carol, and that the church bells which feature so prominently in the novel were modelled on those of St Leonard's on Church Hill.

Modern Arrangement: Woven Design

This design consists of manipulating foliage, weaving is a great statement for any arrangement and creates a more edgier depth to the piece.

Inspiration

Fig 1, Berghe M,V Fluer Creatif Spring 2013

Fig 1 - This arrangement has created a weave that sits on top of an asymmetric vase. This contrasts and displays a harmonic balance. The weave is hidden under vivid flowers and creates a modern look

Fig 2, Berghe M,V Fluer Creatif  winter 2013

Fig 2 - This design is large and would create a wonderful statement on a long table. The grass used in this design flows and hangs elegantly of its mechanics. The tone of the work feels gloomy and sad, i would of chosen more vivid foliage that would contrast with the purple vandas

Development

Original sketch 8/05/2014
For my design i will use anthiuriums in a deep green, these flowers are very curvy and rounded, these flowers will contrast well with a hard mesh. With the mesh i will weave bear grass through to hide the container.

step one 8/05/2014
Step one - Prep oasis and mould to container. For the mesh i designed an aysemetric curved design that would complement the anthiuriums and add more depth to the design.

Step Two - Cut the bear grass to size and weave throughout the copper mesh.
Step Two 8/05/2014

The flower composition is important within this design and spacing is crucial for the balance.

Overall i was very happy with this design and the flower composition looks attractive over the weave detailing
